Results of first ever benchmark study for the recruiting industry

Portland, Maine USA – January 24, 2012 – In the fall of 2011, the International Association of Employment Web Sites (IAEWS) conducted the first worldwide industry benchmark study for job boards.  The study was sponsored by Jobg8.com, an IAEWS member.  Over 100 boards from various regions of the world participated in the study by sending their confidential performance data to a outside market research company that aggregated the data and supplied a detailed report back to each participant.  Only those job boards that participated in the study received the full report.  However, some of the high level findings are summarized below:

  • Sources of job seeker traffic varied by region and niche.  However, search engine marketing (SEM), pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns and aggregators accounted for approximately 50% of the traffic in most regions.  The percentage of job seeker traffic from aggregators alone varied significantly among regions (from 11.6% in Canada to 22.8% in the USA).
  • The average application production per posting on a site was between 3.3 and 5.  The production rates were slightly higher for niche sites and job boards that had been in business for more than 3 years.
  • Marketing expense as a percentage of annual revenue varied by region and size of board (from 1% to 14%).  The average for all boards reporting was 6.7% of annual job board revenue.
  • The cost of selling (direct sales expense) also varied by region (from 11% to 20%), with an average of 15.4% of annual job board revenue.
  • Technology expense associated with the development and maintenance of the Web-site also varied by region and size of the job site, with an average of 5.7% of annual revenue.

Peter Weddle, the executive director of the IAEWS stated “We were very pleased with the participation in our first year.  The data provides real insight for the serious job board executive to compare and improve the performance of their sites.”  Matt Hoffner, the president of Jobg8 Americas added “We were pleased to host discussion forums for the benchmark participants at the fall IAEWS conference in FL and at a location a few weeks later in London. At those meetings there was general optimism that serious job boards can continue to be a source of high quality and low cost applications for their clients.  However, they need to continue to add enhancements and monitor performance to remain as a viable source of quality applicants.  We look forward to sponsoring the study again later in 2012”.
