Does social media eliminate the need for job boards?

Does social media eliminate the need for job boards?

For the past 15 years, job boards have been a standard part of the job seeker and employer ‘tool kit’. And why not?: job boards have proved to be an efficient way for job seekers to locate hiring companies, apply for jobs, and get a resume in front of potential employers.

But now the onset of… Continue

Does your job board need a logo?

There are thousands of job sites out there. If you spend much time looking at them, like I do, you quickly realize that many lack ‘brand identity’.

In other words, they’re forgettable.

Try it yourself. Go to JobBoardReviews or Google “your favorite industry + jobs” and see what you find. I’m betting that (after you get past the aggregator and Big 3 listings) you’ll discover niche sites that look and feel, well,… Continue

Contextual Resume Parsing Software (Follow-up Query)

I'm still searching for anyone who can shed light on the "next generation of resume management software."

An article written many, many months back [don't remember by whom, and unfortunately, can't find] outlined how resume parsing software uses a points system to analyze and grade resumes. A jobseeker holding a bachelor's degree or a certain amount of work experience for example would be given points. Those points were then calculated and the software would present the best… Continue

job boards and country domains

Hello boarders,

Just wondering about country domains and some of the benefits for acquiring them. For global, industry-related, niche job boards is it important to acquire country domains?

If you have 5-10 country domains does it make sense to re-direct them to the .com? What effect does this have? (Assuming the job-board is operating in English only)

Or, should new pages be built for each country? and perhaps with new languages?

I would think… Continue

Death of Cheezhead

I've recently noticed the Cheezhead and HRSEO domains are redirecting to Jobing.

You might ask.. So what?

Well for those of you who compete with Jobing, all of the back links (aka Google Juice) your blog or site was giving Cheezhead and HRSEO are now providing the "CheezJuice" to Jobing, resulting in a healthy heaping helping of "… Continue

Managing the 2-job employee

The era of the two-job employee (let us call him “Sam”) has emerged as a result of the global recession. Sam is a new breed who developed entrepreneurial survival skills to battle the recession, and learned how find and keep a second job.

You, the employer, do not need to be too alarmed if Sam takes on a second job as a baker, or a mechanic, because this would require Sam to be physically present at that location. However the situation is more complicated if Sam takes on a second job… Continue

Omne ignotum pro magnifico

Everything unknown is taken for magnificent. - is how it translates from Latin. In this context, I just read about it in The Red Headed League, Chapter II, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. But what is interesting besides the quote is that in the paragraph following, one Mr. Jabez Wilson, who is a pawn broker, - the date is 1890.

The fascinating part, he is explaining how he runs a pawn shop, as the proprietor, he states, “I have a small pawnbroker's business at Coburg… Continue

How many job boards is too many?

It’s true: anyone and his or her dog can have their own job board. Actually, the dog could probably run the board, thanks to Job*a*matic (well, maybe not my dog – she sleeps too much).

How many job boards is too many? Peter Weddle says we have 100,000 or so – but only a small percentage of these makes money. If it seems like there’s been an sharp… Continue

Copy, Paste, Click - The Web 2.0 Job Search Approach

When looking for a new job, it can be difficult to connect directly to potential employers and get them interested in you. In fact, it isn’t easy to make a non-virtual connection with anyone anymore. I get more invitations to birthday parties through Facebook than I do by email or phone, and work is just as technology oriented as my home-life.

This got me thinking:

Has applying to a job become an endless cycle of “copy, paste, click” with little or no thought going into… Continue
