Know a site that needs an extreme job board makeover?

The formula for the extremely popular reality series “Extreme Home Makeover” is simple and compelling: find a family (or sometimes an individual) who have done good works in their community but have been beaten up by bad luck luck; add the

Extreme Home Makeover crew and local supporters; create a new home for

the family. All in the space of 7…

Suggestions for social extension to job board

I am in the process of launching a niche board catering to retail jobs and I have a question regarding how I can best move this site beyond "just a job board" I have been thinking about adding a Ning community as an extension to the Jamit based script I am running on the home page. I am wondering if anyone has success using anything else except Ning. Any suggestions on how to create a more social community feel to attract visitors and make it stickier… Continue

Power, Power, Power – not good!

Does your website expose a job search? Great, todays post is to challenge YOU!

What happens if you put a powerful large engine in a smart car?

Typically a bigger engine means faster car. The top of the range super cars have huge engines so surely we can copy this? We can shove one enormous engine into a little smart car to achieve the most

wonderful driving experience? Well NO, we all realise that this wont

work! Something is going to break,…

Credit system for job board. Bad idea? Good idea?

Just thought I'd solicit opinions. Some sites use a system whereby an

employer must purchase credits in order to post jobs. Other sites have a

system whereby you simply select the type of job post ad you want, and

post it.

In my opinion, the credit system adds another level that can frustrate employers who want to get in, post a job, and get out.

I doubt many employers will ever stock up on credits, because everyone is

spending only what they need to post… Continue

Job board software – competition is good

Back in the early days of job boards, technology was fairly straightforward – you hired programmers, told them what you wanted, and they created it. As we moved past 2000, many job boards were adding

features piecemeal, updating their sites occasionally, and generally

moving forward in a hodgepodge fashion.

Job board software vendors first appeared around 1999, when Jobbex introduced its first pre-packaged offering. As the decade progressed, more vendors moved in, and at…

Problems with highlighting text

Originally posted on my blog.

Highlighting keyword search terms in a search result list or job advert may look and feel nice. It can also be useful for quickly finding

relevant words within large pages of text. But, it can have the reverse

effect if you don’t script it correctly!

Same job advert, 3 different keyword searches. Notice how the search function… Continue

The problem of duplicate job postings

You know what gets a job seeker truly steamed? Clicking on a link for a job posting – and discovering that it’s exactly the same job he looked at a few seconds earlier. Same job, different listings =

unhappy job seeker.

How does this happen? Well, any job board that allows 3rd party recruiters to post their open positions runs the risk of duplicate postings. Let’s say that ABC Company has an listing for a mechanical

engineer. The HR person posts it on their…

Help me fight bank fraud by referring me to a decent merchant bank.

I say bank fraud is when your own bank steals from you.

What am I talking about?

Picture a scam artist somewhere in the Internet underground stealing a credit card in the real world. He uses this credit card to buy a job posting on your job board. You review all jobs by hand but you don't see anything wrong with this one. You don't know what the scammer does with the resumes he gets from you, but you can be sure it's not pretty.

When the card owner discovers the… Continue
