Job Boarders

I'm curious how many of you use a job board software vs. building your own? For those that have built their own, would you consider purchasing a private label job board? What kinds of features would you like to see?

We write all the code in ASP.NET for www.postjobfree.com. The major reason -- flexibility.
If you use job board software -- you are very limited by what you can and cannot do.
Plus you have heavy competition from other folks who use exactly the same software

Hello Shaun,

Here is me giving a list of all the job board softwares out there:

http://www.jobboarders.com/forum/topic/show?id=882452%3ATopic%3A1450

If you buy webscribble's webjobs (which they recently updated), you will not be able to customize it because the code is encrypted. Email them asking them this, and they will tell you no. I will tell you YES, and do will other people who have bought it. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=1723739

As for http://www.ejobsitesoftware.com/ , what you need to do is stay away from them as far as possible. You can view this http://forums.digitalpoint.com/member.php?u=46996 and this http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=1749365&postcount=19 and this http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=3414686&postcount=49 .

Hi Tarun,

There is a need for genuine managed Job board software. The vast majority of software available are fixed price solutions from $100 up to $10,000 plus. What is needed for private label job board is a combination of fixed fee upfront design/installation fees with an ongoing revenue sharing model or fixed monthly management fees. Features like you find in Parodia & Jobbex.

Thanks ComputerJobs.in. That's exactly what I've been trying to figure out. Shaun, your list is an excellent one and I was quickly able to get a good sense for the options available. Frankly, I wasn't super impressed by many of them because the solutions either seemed either complicated to setup, had a dated look and feature set compared to the trends in the internet space, or had a huge upfront cost and/or complicated terms that make sense for larger plays. I'm sure a lot of job boards have organically grown their technology, probably dealing with the struggles of adding on more advanced functionality to keep up with market trends. If anyone has a wishlist of what they wish their software could do, I would be interested in hearing more.

Just to let you know, that from my opinion, if you want a ready made job board, then www.jamit.com is BY FAR the best bang for the buck.

The demo here http://www.jamit.com/jobs/ looks really ugly, but all the front end is customizable. Actually the back end is also customizable.

If you check out the feature lists http://www.jamit.com/features.htm , it's obviously very crazy. They also update it very regularly.

You can view how these people changed it http://www.northbayjobfinder.com/ .

I agree with E.D. However there are very few partners mentioned on the Jamit site that can take the script and customize to a high level for the job board owner. Jamit should offer a customization service but they don't. They should have a freelancer section/notice board where Job board owners can post their requirements..

E.D.,

Thanks for the plug, I didn't even know about JobBoarders until a week ago. I can definitely say that I have been happy with Jamit and Adam, it's developer. I do also have to say though, that NorthBayJobFinder is not running Jamit straight "out of box". It's probably 85% standard and 15% custom PHP that I hacked into the Jamit source. But now that Jamit uses themes, it is much easier to customize it.

If you are still looking to develop it yourself than what i suggest is you do it with a publishing platform, ie; a content management system (CMS)

Wordpres, typepad, and Expression Engine are all content management system. There are way more.

This http://jobs.wordpress.net/ is a very simple job board using wordpress.

This http://www.legalmojo.com/ is a simple but beautiful job board using typepad.

Expression Engine is becoming very popular becuase it basically comes with everything. You can view some easy to understand features here http://expressionengine.com/overview/features/ . Its only a one time fee of 250 dollars for the software http://expressionengine.com/overview/pricing/, and then you get someone to do the job board for you. There are already job boards using it.

This http://jobsandgigs.com/ is developed using Expression Engine, and the person who built it is http://www.expressionengineer.com/ who i can personally vouch for. He lives in sweden, and is really big. Is he even being used by companies in chine to create social networking sites.

So why use a Content Management System ? Well, it is just a publishing platform, to publish content on a website. If you were to build it without a CMS, you would have to build everything from the ground up. Back end posting and front end posting would have to be built. Listing of content would have to be built. RSS feeds would have to be built. A membership base would have to be built (username, register, employer, jobseeker). An email/tell-a-friend thing would have to be built. If you want statistics for each job post, that would have to be built. AND, BIGGEST of all, if you want an e-commerce system so employers can buy job posts, that would also have to be built from scratch. Spam control and security would have to be built. Making a mailing list would have to be built. All these things i told you would have to be built from scratch without a CMS. Its liking building a blog software form the ground up.

Everything i mentioned above already comes with Expression Engineer http://expressionengine.com/overview/features/. You can contact Andy http://www.expressionengineer.com/ and just have a chat with with him. He's an expert on Expression Engineer and he doesnt charge that much at all.
